Salt Lake City’s Sunnyside Park is preparing for significant improvements aimed at drawing visitors regionwide. The park, known for its sports fields and proximity to cultural landmarks, including the University of Utah, Veterans Administration Healthcare facilities, and many mixed-use and residential neighborhoods, will benefit from renovations funded by the city’s $85 million “GO” bond, as well as contributions from the University of Utah through a land swap agreement.
J-U-B ENGINEERS Inc., in collaboration with The Langdon Group (TLG), is spearheading landscape architecture and design efforts for the project. TLG played a central role in shaping the park’s redesign through robust public engagement and preliminary design work conducted between fall 2024 and spring 2025. The TLG team facilitated a key stakeholder workshop, hosted a public open house, produced a postcard mailer to nearby communities, and implemented digital outreach via the project website and City social media channels. All outreach materials were designed using the Salt Lake City Public Lands brand and style guide. Feedback from over 350 residents and park users helped TLG identify key themes and community priorities, including:
A major component of the project focuses on sustainable landscape practices. J-U-B’s team is applying principles from the Sustainable SITES Initiative (SITES), a program that promotes environmentally responsible design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes. The team has the expertise and credentials to guide the project’s sustainability goals.
Construction documents will be developed this fall, with plans to modernize park amenities, improve accessibility, and provide a more vibrant, functional space for both residents and regional visitors for years to come.
