Project Overview
J-U-B was retained to provide site landscape and irrigation plans for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Energy Science Capability Facility (ESC). The 10-acre site includes a new science laboratory/classroom building, a large parking lot, and supporting landscaped areas.
Design Features
The front and back entrances of the building were designed with plaza-style spaces to encourage outdoor gathering for students and faculty. The landscape was carefully developed to:
-
Screen unsightly views
-
Provide shade and comfort
-
Add visual interest and variety
-
Seamlessly integrate with the overall PNNL campus aesthetic
Sustainable Elements
-
Rain garden/bioretention areas were created to manage stormwater and remove nutrients from roof drains and pavement runoff
-
High-efficiency irrigation technology was implemented to minimize water use while ensuring healthy plant growth
Outcome
The result is a welcoming, environmentally conscious campus facility with low maintenance needs and thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces that enhance both functionality and aesthetics.
