Maybell Diversion –
Maybell, CO

Project Overview

Located approximately 10 miles east of Maybell, Colorado, the Maybell Diversion Rehabilitation and Headgate Modernization project aimed to replace a century-old diversion structure on the Yampa River. The existing infrastructure was deteriorated and no longer allowed for reliable flow control, impacting both irrigation and downstream water users. J-U-B partnered with Maybell Irrigation District (MID) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to deliver a modern diversion and headgate with automated controls, improved structural reliability, and environmental benefits such as enhanced fish passage and boater safety.

Challenges

This complex project presented challenges including active waterway construction, coordination around seasonal high flows and wildlife activity, limited site access, and difficult logistics for delivering materials such as concrete, large-diameter pipe, and 3,000 tons of boulders. Safety and environmental protection were also top priorities due to the site’s natural conditions.

How We Addressed the Issues

J-U-B and the contractor implemented rigorous safety protocols and daily planning meetings to mitigate risks. Creative solutions such as using helicopters, track-mounted mixer trucks, and concrete pumps ensured efficient material placement. Two-way radios supported traffic control on narrow access roads and were critical for communication and emergency preparedness. Environmental measures such as erosion control, spill prevention, and fire protection protocols were implemented throughout construction.

Results

The project was completed well ahead of schedule and under budget. It provided MID with improved water delivery reliability, automated headgate controls, and enhanced flow monitoring. Boater safety and endangered fish passage were also improved, benefiting a broad group of stakeholders.

Benefits

This collaborative, multi-benefit project strengthened relationships between water users, landowners, wildlife advocates, and conservation partners. It increased drought resilience, modernized irrigation infrastructure, and improved ecological function in the Yampa River.

Uniqueness

The project stands out for its innovative delivery, stakeholder collaboration, and environmental focus. The use of the CM/GC method, combined with hands-on project management from J-U-B, helped navigate challenges and deliver a successful outcome. It reflects years of partnership between MID, TNC, and other agencies.
