The recently completed Kidd Island Road Project delivered crucial safety and environmental upgrades across approximately 4,500 feet. This vital undertaking benefited from JUB’s guidance throughout the application process to secure funding and manage and meet the requirements of federal, state, and local funding.
Key improvements included significant roadway realignment and widening, along with essential drainage and utility upgrades. A hazardous curve at the intersection of Valhalla Road was straightened to meet modern safety standards, necessitating a substantial hillside cut and the relocation of roughly 600 feet of adjacent Kidd Creek.
Previously, Kidd Creek’s close proximity to the road caused frequent flooding and erosion, negatively impacting both the roadway’s integrity and the creek’s water quality (classified as 303(d) impaired for sediment). The creek’s realignment, a complex process requiring a USACE permit, was thoughtfully designed to address these issues.
The new channel incorporates natural rock weirs to manage flow, native alluvium for bank stabilization, and woody habitat structures crafted from trees cleared on-site. Executed during the no-flow season to minimize environmental impact, the relocated creek banks were further stabilized with 1,200 native plants and mulch. This project exemplifies how essential infrastructure improvements can be achieved while prioritizing environmental stewardship, supported by diligent adherence to funding requirements.
