Project Overview
The City of Lewiston aims to create a “community hub” offering high-quality recreational facilities and activities for users of all ages, interests, and abilities. The 187-acre site features scenic views and vistas, but presents challenges including complex topography, a long, narrow site shape, and shallow bedrock depths requiring significant grading, reclamation, and stabilization.
Master Planning Approach
J-U-B’s landscape architects led a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, GIS experts, funding advisors, and public involvement specialists to develop a comprehensive site master plan. This process included site inventory and analysis, multiple concept designs, financial and economic evaluations, funding strategies, public engagement, and the final master plan report.
Innovative Public Engagement
To enhance civic participation, the team developed a photo-realistic 3D model of the site, allowing community members and potential donors to virtually explore the park. Users could view 360-degree scenes at key locations and provide geolocated comments through an interactive virtual “story map.”
Key Planning Components
A critical element of the plan was an irrigation feasibility analysis to assess potential sources, flows, and pressures required for park irrigation. Manicured lawn areas are limited to sports fields, while native plantings and seed mixes are used on slopes and passive recreation areas like trails.
Phase One and Future Amenities
The team is currently under contract for the phase one design, which includes:
-
