J-U-B Hosts Fourth Annual Drafting Tour at the College of Southern Idaho

On May 2nd, the Twin Falls office hosted its fourth annual tour for students enrolled in the Drafting Technology program at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI). For many of the students, this tour provided their initial exposure to the fields of civil drafting, design, surveying, and engineering. The purpose of this tour is to inspire students to explore the numerous career opportunities available within these disciplines.

The Drafting Technology program at CSI offers hands-on training using both CAD programs and traditional drafting techniques. This year, eight students from the program participated in the office tour, gaining valuable insights into the industry.

Mark Holtzen, Area Manager, commenced the tour with a warm welcome and an overview of the work conducted by J-U-B. He highlighted the core groups within the Twin Falls office and emphasized the collaborative efforts to “Help each other create better communities”.

Subsequently, the following presenters described their professions and the application of CAD in their work:

• Tom Ruby, PLS, Surveying.
• Chelsea James, PE, Transportation Services Group.
• Matt Day, PE, Land Development Group.
• Erik Eyre, PE, Young Professionals.
• Thomas Leija, PE, Aviation Services Group.

Additionally, Katherine Leija, AIT with CSHQA (and spouse of Thomas Leija), discussed her role in an architectural firm. Katherine is an alumna of the CSI Drafting Technology program.

To conclude the tour, George Kinslow, CAD Tech-Designer, discussed the features of Civil 3D and his role as a drafter/designer, elaborating on how he supports various projects in the multi-discipline office. The students were shown civil projects that included conceptual commercial lot development, survey documents, residential subdivisions, wastewater treatment ponds, and municipal water and sewer upgrades. George, also a graduate of the CSI Drafting Technology program, represents J-U-B on CSI’s Drafting Technical Advisory Board.
