Located in Garden Valley, the South Fork Payette River Bridge (also known as the Alder Creek Bridge, Silver Bridge or Wetzel Bridge) is 82 years old. The aging riveted-truss structure, 193 feet long and 18 feet wide, is owned and maintained by Boise County.

It is listed as a critical bridge replacement on the State Transportation Improvement Program by the Idaho Transportation Department. Few bridges of its type still exist in Idaho because they have passed their useable life and no longer meet current bridge standards.

Preliminary surveying, design and environmental work is under way. Construction of the bridge is scheduled for 2010.

Boise County and the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) are working with J-U-B ENGINEERS, Inc. of Boise to design and prepare a bid package for construction of the new bridge. The Langdon Group, an Idaho public involvement firm, is facilitating the project’s public outreach efforts.

PROJECT UPDATE

Two bridge types, concrete and steel, were analyzed in the Concept Report. The
Concept Report, finalized in November 2007, identified positive and negative characteristics of both the concrete and steel bridge alternatives. The report also included information on the design of the bridge, environmental impacts and public input. Based on information presented in the report, Boise County recommended the steel alternative move forward into preliminary design.

WHAT'S NEXT
Preliminary design of the bridge will begin; the public will be invited to review and comment on the bridge’s preliminary design at a public meeting scheduled for late winter or early spring 2008. The environmental approval process is expected to be complete in late summer or fall 2008.
